Vegan Grocery Store

Choosing a vegan lifestyle has never been more popular. People choose to go vegan for a variety of reasons. Some people choose to eat vegan food for climate change and ethical reasons.

Others have specific allergies or illnesses that mean they can’t have food like eggs or dairy. Some people simply feel better when they eat vegan foods.

However, one of the biggest challenges can be finding vegan groceries and cruelty-free food. At Doorstep Organics, we have an amazing range of vegan products, ready to deliver to your doorstep!

What is vegan food?

Following a vegan diet means cutting out all animal products from your diet. The most common foods vegans avoid are meat, dairy and eggs. However, products like honey and gelatin are also animal products and gelatin especially can be something many people don’t realise is an ingredient in commercial food products. Organic nuts, organic fruits & vegetables, and whole grains are the staples of the vegan diet.

Why consider eating vegan food?

Whilst many people think that a vegan diet is all about animal cruelty, people choose to eat vegan food products from a vegan grocery for a variety of reasons. Ethical reasons are a big driver in choosing to eat only vegan products, especially among those who do not wish to support commercial farming practices. Many vegans simply believe that there’s no need to harm (or rather, consume) animals when there are plenty of perfectly good plant-based alternatives to food, clothing and products used day-to-day.

As well as reducing animal cruelty, going vegan is the “single biggest way” to reduce your impact on the planet, according to research from the University of Oxford. This is one of the biggest reasons veganism has been on the rise in recent years.

The way meat is produced is not good for the climate. Farming requires a huge amount of water and crops. The same goes for the transport costs of getting food from the farm to your plate.

Feeding animals is also a challenge. Animals need much more grain to be produced. To make room for all the grain, forests need to be cleared which takes away the natural habitats of many different animals.

Commercial farming also produces more waste products like manure and methane gases. In fact, total emissions from global livestock represent 14.5 percent of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide (according to the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation). This is more than all emissions from ships, planes, trucks, cars and all other transport put together.

Is eating vegan food healthy?

The great news about choosing to eat vegan food is there can be some really positive impacts on your health. Most vegans choose to eat more fruit, vegetables and other plant-based products like whole grains, nuts and seeds. These are all healthy options packed full of beneficial fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Eating more plant-based meal means more healthy nutrients, which can also improve blood pressure and cholesterol. Vegan eating can also lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

Animal fats are a risky food group, so eating vegan means avoiding them altogether. They have been linked to a range of illnesses and health problems. Examples are heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and hypertension.

Is it hard to eat vegan products?

It’s a common misconception that vegans can’t get enough protein in their diets. There are plenty of great vegan protein sources including tofu, tempeh, hemp, seeds, nuts and legumes, including beans, chickpeas and edamame.

A vegan diet needs a bit more planning than a regular diet, but its rise in popularity has meant there are plenty of great vegan options around, even from fast food stores! You can easily find vegan chocolate, vegan cheese, plant-based burgers, vegan wine and vegan pizza on menus around Australia. It just takes a little planning in advance!

Why everyone should add a little vegan into their lives

While eating a vegan diet has been popularised as an entire lifestyle choice, in recent times it has become increasingly popular to add plant-based foods into a conventional diet, without necessarily cutting 100% of animal products out.

Vegan eating doesn’t always have to mean vegan living. Whether you’re concerned about the impact of your food choices on climate change or want to make cruelty free choices, you don’t need to have a completely plant-based diet. The rise of ‘flexitarianism’ is the perfect example of this. ‘Flexitarians’ take a flexible approach to eating vegetarian or vegan.

They might, for example, have ‘meatless Monday’ or only eat animal products when eating out or on weekends. This is a great way to help make a positive impact without having a huge change to their lifestyle or going totally vegan. For many, it’s a starting point to eventually transition to a vegetarian or vegan life, as people often feel more healthy and energetic when they add more plant-based foods to their diet.

There’s also a natural benefit of having less convenience or takeaway food available, so heading toward vegan eating can help you make healthier choices overall.

How to get started with vegan eating

If you want to transition to a vegan diet, regardless of whether you do it full time or not, there are some simple steps you can take. First, write out what you typically eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and see what simple swaps you can make to continue eating your favourite foods. For example, if you have a smoothie for breakfast, swap the milk for almond milk.

Many breakfast cereals are already vegan, and oats or granola are great options. Like bacon and eggs on the weekend? Try making a tofu scramble with tomatoes and mushrooms or a vegetable hash.

If you’re a fan of baking, egg substitutes are easily found. You can either use ground flaxseeds and water, the liquid from a can of chickpeas or a specially made egg replacer product.

Meat-based recipes are some of the easiest to adapt, as there are so many great vegan proteins and vegan meat substitutes readily available. Tofu is great in a curry or stir fry, falafel makes an excellent burger patty or wrap and you can get a myriad of meat replacements that taste pretty similar to the real thing.

One of our favourites is jackfruit as an alternative to pulled pork. With a bit of flavouring from a vegan-friendly BBQ sauce, you’ll hardly notice the difference in your tacos or nachos.

Cheese is one thing many people say they will miss too much if they go vegan. Luckily, there is an incredible range of vegan cheese replacements, for all different scenarios. Nutritional Yeast is an excellent vegan alternative to sprinkling parmesan on a dish. We have a range of different flavoured versions, including a smokey maple flavour.

Cashew nuts make a great feta alternative, and The Vegan Dairy does an excellent marinated Persian feta, or Dairy Free Down Under makes some fabulous cheddar style blocks of vegan cheese.

Usually, with a bit of planning, main meals like breakfast, lunch and dinner are easier to find substitutes for. Where it can feel a bit challenging is finding vegan snacks when you’re on the go. Without eggs and dairy, many baked goods and ready-made snacks don’t fit the vegan bill.

Fortunately, there are plenty of vegan dips to have with crackers and an ever-growing range of sweets.
